Pond Liner
Pond Liner
Think of pond liner like a foundation of a home. A water feature is only as good as the liner (foundation) that it’s built upon. Choosing a cheap liner that isn’t designed to withstand what you’re building can lead to leaks and hours of labor fixing problems. Starting with a good foundation will give you peace of mind.
Flexible pond liner is one of the most popular types of liners today. Mainly because of its physical malleability that allows more design options. You can use flexible pond liners for a range of projects from shallow and small splash ponds for kids to a raised koi pond for fish hobbyists, a large pond, waterfall, or rainwater harvesting.
Firestone Pond Liner
Firestone PondGard liner is one of the most popular pond liners installed today. Many professional water feature contractors use it along with serious do-it-yourself homeowners. Pond Gard liner remains flexible -from 45° to + 175°F to allow for year round installation. And also has built-in protection against frost, ozone, UV exposure, snow, and extreme temperatures. Specially designed to be safe for fish and aquatic plants.

FAQs
Here are some frequently asked pond liner questions:
If you want a water feature that will last for many years a thick quality liner will be money well spent. If you plan on possibly changing the water feature in a few years a thinner cheap liner will be fine. This applies to warranty lengths as well. No need today extra for a 20 year warranty if you plan on replacing it in 5 years. A 10 year warranty that usually comes with a PVC liners will be more than enough.
If you live in an area with harsh winters you’ll want a thicker pond lining to withstand the freezing and thawing cycles.

Yes and no. If you have any sharp tree rocks, rocks, etc.. then it’s always a good idea to use underlayment. Also if you are digging into the ground you should always use pond underlayment. As it allows any gasses to escape easier.
Flexible rubber pond liner is susceptible to punctures from gravel, rocks, or sharp tree roots. You should protect the liner. Based on your site conditions you may need a couple inches of sand underneath and some layers of pond underlayment.
You generally do not need underlayment in waterfall and stream areas that has good soil underneath.
Installing flexible rubber pond liners is pretty simple. Depending on what you’re building it’s basically just spread the underlay (if you’re using it) and liner over the hole, fill it with water, and tidy up the edging.
Tip – Save the scrap liner you cut off. You can use this at a later date for patching if needed. You can also use them for plant pockets.
Many people assume that one solid sheet outdoor pond liner is stronger than two pieces that have been seamed together. Elongation and strength tests actually show that non-seamed areas usually fail first. Factory seams are actually the strongest point of the liner.
UV-Light is the major culprit in the deterioration of most landscape pond liners. Manufacturers will warranty the liner for how long they think it can hold up to direct UV exposure.
If you cover the liner with rocks or gravel it should extend the liners life well beyond the warranty period.
