Pond Liner Installation

Pond Liner

Think of pond liner like a foundation of a home.  A water feature is only as good as the liner (foundation) that it’s built upon.  Choosing a cheap liner that isn’t designed to withstand what you’re building can lead to leaks and hours of labor fixing problems.  Starting with a good foundation will give you peace of mind.

Flexible pond liner is one of the most popular types of liners today.  Mainly because of its physical malleability that allows more design options.  You can use flexible pond liners for a range of projects from shallow and small splash ponds for kids to a raised koi pond for fish hobbyists, a large pond, waterfall, or rainwater harvesting.

Firestone Pond Liner

Firestone Pond Liner

FAQs

Here are some frequently asked pond liner questions:

While no liner will be indestructible (clay, polyurea, and concrete are pretty durable).  You can make your EPDM pond liner dog proof by covering the top with a layer or two of underlayment.  You could also place some additional scrap liner on top as well for added protection in the areas that the dog/s would step on.  If the bottom of the pond is deep enough where the dogs nails cannot get to it you should be OK in those areas.

Unless the project is temporary with a small budget we always recommend EPDM as a pond liner membrane.

If you have a leaking pond liner we suggest getting one of our pond liner repair kits and following the instructions.  If it is a large hole you may need to seam some new liner in place, or replace the liner all together.

When comparing fish pond liners for sale it’s important that you use “fish safe pond liner”.  Some companies try and sell cheap EPDM rubber liner that’s actually made for roofing.  Containing toxic chemicals that could kill wildlife, pets, fish and plants.  Look for a stamp specifically stating that it’s fish safe.

Flexible rubber pond liner is usually sold in 30 to 60 mil thicknesses.  PVC pond liners are generally 20 to 32 mil.  Keep in mind the thicker the liner the better.  But, as thickness goes up so does the price.  You get what you pay for.

If you want a water feature that will last for many years a thick quality liner will be money well spent.  If you plan on possibly changing the water feature in a few years a thinner cheap liner will be fine.  This applies to warranty lengths as well.  No need today extra for a 20 year warranty if you plan on replacing it in 5 years.  A 10 year warranty that usually comes with a PVC liners will be more than enough.

If you live in an area with harsh winters you’ll want a thicker pond lining to withstand the freezing and thawing cycles.

Yes. The best pond liner material is really dependent on the application and budget. Here is a breakdown of the cost of pond liners available:

Pond Lining Material

  • Cost – Generally $.35 per square foot.
  • Advantages – A cheap pond liner.  Which is acceptable for bogs/wetlands, really large ponds, temporary projects, etc.
  • Disadvantages – Tears easily and isn’t very flexible.  Polyethylene liners cannot be seamed together without expensive welding equipment.
  • Comments – Be cautious with how you use polyethylene and other discounted pond liners.
  • Cost – Generally $.50 per square foot.
  • Advantages – A fairly durable liner. That’s pretty widely available and usually comes with a 10 year warranty.
  • Disadvantages – Doesn’t handle freeze/thaw cycles well (you shouldn’t use this if your area gets harsh winters), or seal as good as EPDM or rubber pond liners.
  • Comments – Make sure the PVC pond liner you buy is made specifically for water features.
  • Cost – Generally $.60 per square foot.
  • Advantages – Usually comes with a 20 year warranty and is very durable.  Most EPDM pond liner for sale can be installed during and withstand cold temperatures.  More resistant to UV-light than cheaper liners. Flexibility allows it to easily have irregular shapes and conform to the nooks and crannies in the application.  Large boulders can be placed on top of EPDM rubber pond liner without worry.
  • Disadvantages – More expensive.  Seaming EPDM pond liner together requires the right weather conditions.
  • Comments – Use only fish safe EPDM liner.
  • Cost – Generally $.62 per square foot.
  • Advantages – A good alternative if you need a large pond liner over 50’x100′.  45 mil polypropylene pond liner is generally more durable than 45 mil EPDM pond liner.  Can be seamed together using a standard heat gun in the field.
  • Disadvantages – More expensive.
  • Comments – Use only fish safe EPDM liner.
  • Cost – Generally $.80 per square foot.
  • Advantages – A heavy duty pond liner.  Most of the time butyl rubber pond liners come with a 20 year warranty, but should have no problem lasting 50 years or more.  Best choice for areas with harsh winters.
  • Disadvantages – Can be hard to find and is the most expensive.
  • Comments – Comes in 30 mil and 60 mil thicknesses.

Yes and no.  If you have any sharp tree rocks, rocks, etc.. then it’s always a good idea to use underlayment.  Also if you are digging into the ground you should always use pond underlayment.  As it allows any gasses to escape easier.

Flexible rubber pond liner is susceptible to punctures from gravel, rocks, or sharp tree roots.  You should protect the liner.  Based on your site conditions you may need a couple inches of sand underneath and some layers of pond underlayment.

You generally do not need underlayment in waterfall and stream areas that has good soil underneath.

Installing flexible rubber pond liners is pretty simple.  Depending on what you’re building it’s basically just spread the underlay (if you’re using it) and liner over the hole, fill it with water, and tidy up the edging.

Tip – Save the scrap liner you cut off.  You can use this at a later date for patching if needed.  You can also use them for plant pockets.

Many people assume that one solid sheet outdoor pond liner is stronger than two pieces that have been seamed together.  Elongation and strength tests actually show that non-seamed areas usually fail first.  Factory seams are actually the strongest point of the liner.

UV-Light is the major culprit in the deterioration of most landscape pond liners.  Manufacturers will warranty the liner for how long they think it can hold up to direct UV exposure.

If you cover the liner with rocks or gravel it should extend the liners life well beyond the warranty period.
