Our geotextile non-woven fabric material is made out of stable fibers that are heat set and then they use needle punching for a high quality bond.

Fabric is available in three different weights for different uses; 4oz, 6oz, 8oz.

8 oz. pond underlayment in various widths and sizes.  Comes in rolls in the widths of 5′, 10′, and 15′. Using this thickness of pond underlay can boost pond liners resistance to punctures by 400% for 45 Mil EPDM rubber pond liner.

 

Non-Woven Geotextile Fabric Can be Used For:

• Pond Liner Installation: Use 8oz underlayment underneath pond liner to increase puncture resistance up to 400% over standard pond underlayment!
• Pond Rock Padding: When installing sharp stones in your pond you can use geotextile pond underlayment and an added level of protection on top of the pond liner as well. Simply cut out a area of underlayment material the size you need, place it on top of the liner and then set your sharp edged stone etc. and save yourself a patch and frustration of a pond leak.
• Landscape Fabric: Great for letting water through and keeping weeds from growing in commercial applications for home gardens.
• Drainage Fabric: Can be used as drainage fabric to filter water in drains. Provides a good flow of water, but excellent soil stabilization.
• Farm and Cattle: The NRCS has recommended this for drainage and separation as a inexpensive solution to the problem of soil stabilization. Can also be used as a cattle crossing carpet, feed troughs, feed lots, and watering ramps. Also great for dirt or gravel access driveways/roads.
• Erosion Control: The NRCS has also recommended this fabric for shoreline slope and soil repair, and more importantly prevention.
• Separation Fabric: can be used in paving and gravel applications where a medium weight underlayment for stabilization and separation. For walkways, driveways, paver bases, asphalt road work, patios, and more.

Information for Using This Fabric as Pond Underlayment

During pond construction it is recommended that after digging your plant shelves you should lay down this pond underlayment material. What this does is protect the pond liner from sharp object like rocks, sticks/roots, and also help protects against animals chewing on the back side of the liner. This usually happens in the fall/winter time when rodents and small animals are trying to build a nest. It is definitely no fun patching a liner when you could be enjoying it come spring time.

Using commercial grade pond underlayment will make your job easier than trying to use newspaper, or old carpet like in the old days of pond building. It will stay in place and conform to shelves and ledges easier. Plus it is UV resistant and will not rot.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that when digging out your water feature you are going below ground level. When you go below ground level you will have some gases that need to be released. Without a material like this between the liner and ground the gasses will be trapped. Then, they will try and go straight up out of the ground causing the EPDM liner to bubble. Avoid the hassle of having that happen and do your install correct the first time with commercial underlayment.

Cool Idea – Use Pond Underlayment as Plant Baskets:

Another cool tip/ trick of the trade.. instead of buying ugly plastic aquatic plant baskets use the geotextile (NRCS PDF Doc) and also called geosynthetics underlayment to hold and contain soil.

Simply create a void between rocks/boulders, etc.. and then place under lay down, then fill with soil and aquatic plant, cover and hide with stones for a natural look!
